Master of Arts Degree in Cinema-Television
Concentration: Script Writing
SCA Alumni, Cheryl McKay
Cheryl McKay earned her M.A. in Film Aesthetics and Production from Regent University in 1995, later beginning her professional career in script and screenwriting in 1997. Upon graduating from Regent, she has written more than 50 scripts, including the screenplay for the highly acclaimed Hollywood film The Ultimate Gift starring Abigail Breslin, James Garner and Brian Dennehy.
McKay says she chose Regent because she felt the university offered the education and experience she needed. "I not only wanted a strong education in screenwriting, but I also wanted hands-on experience on film and television sets," she explains. At Regent, McKay had the opportunity to write one feature film, two television pilots and two half-hour dramas. "It was like going through writer's boot camp," Cheryl says, "but writing at this pace prepared me for the deadlines I've faced as a professional writer. The two years I was at Regent were the best years of my life because of the opportunities I was given to write and direct in such a creative atmosphere."
Most importantly, Regent taught McKay how to use her craft to make a difference in the industry. Since Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ hit the big screen in 2004, there has been a resurgence of Christian themes and values-based entertainment in Hollywood. McKay has the unique opportunity to be a pivotal voice in this movement and permeate a highly influential medium.
