Strategic Communication & Journalism Faculty Spotlight:
Marc Newman, Ph.D.

Marc Newman, Ph.D. Associate Professor

The art of filmmaking has advanced by leaps and bounds since its conception. However, there is one aspect that remains the same. Filmmaking was and still is one of the most influential mediums of storytelling for modern culture. Strategic Communication & Journalism Associate Professor Dr. Marc T. Newman is an interpreter of Hollywood film who aims to unlock its spiritual truths through his web-based company MovieMinistry.com.

The site equips pastors with sermon illustrations from popular film. It helps the Church use movies to connect with people, particularly the youth. Dr. Newman’s weekly articles and commentary on Christianity, film and culture have appeared on thousands of sites such as Time magazine, ChristianityToday.com, Crosswalk, Catholic Exchange and FoxNews.com.

The many articles available through Dr. Newman’s website teach people how to interpret what a film is saying. One popular article, which was based on the 2006 film Glory Road, was co-written by Dr. Newman with legendary basketball great A.C. Green.

"We want to help parents and leaders to respond to their culture,” Dr. Newman explains in a Christian Newswire feature. “Hollywood speaks to youth every week. We thought it was time to use what they say—to examine their ideas as well as our own lives—in the light of Biblical truth. We can use movies to reach people." And that is just what he is doing.
