Between Two Cultures: A Biblical Leadership Response to the Cultural Dimensions of Individualism And Collectivism

Today’s leaders must consider the place of culture as they make decisions and contemplate the direction of their organizations. Whether their impact is within their community, across their continent, or into other countries, the effect of globalism and cultural issues is pervasive. Leadership and organizational research and writing has recognized this and spent considerable resources addressing these cultural issues. This includes presenting new insights into how organizations and leaders need to make paradigm shifts in personalities, perspectives, and principles. These shifts have experienced varying degrees of acceptance and fulfillment. The cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism have had a major impact on leaders and organizations. Individualism that pervades western cultures is focuses on personal initiative and achievement. On the other hand, collectivism focuses on the “in group” to find purpose and direction. This book considers the effect of the dimensions of individualism and collectivism on a wide range of leadership and organizational issues. These include (a) the human side of leadership; (b) understanding leadership’s roots and their cultivation; (c) values and ethics in the life of the leader; (d) strategic planning, design, and implementation; (e) organizational structure, systems, and environments; (f) new global neighbors; (g) future organization design and leadership; (h) innovation and creativity; and (i) maintaining and sustaining leadership development and demise. The author points the reader toward a better source for insights regarding personalities, perspectives, and principles that bridge cultures. The author suggests biblical principles that can be applied cross-culturally. Each leadership and organizational issue is considered from collective, individual, and biblical views. In conclusion, the author suggests the biblical approach is the most helpful and should be applied by leaders and organizations that desire to be successful across cultures.
