Doctoral Project Abstract

The 21st Century Church: Emerging Organizational Structures and Leadership Requirements

Steve Raimo
Regent University

The 21st century Church does and will continually face radical change and much uncertainty with undefined problems that require organizational models and leadership qualities and competencies far different from that which was successful in the 20th century. This book addresses these issues from both an organizational perspective and a leadership perspective. It  will be most helpful to 1) church leaders who desire to lead strategically by understanding the dynamics of organizations, recognize the need to change, and want to understand the change process and its impact on the organization and its members; 2) consultants and change agents called to help church leaders and constituents implement change by understanding the need for and the processes required for maintaining relevance and effectiveness in the 21st century; and 3) teachers interested in helping future leaders grasp the concepts of organizational structure and design, change methodologies, and the leadership needed to successfully guide the church organization in this century.

To this end, this book is divided into four parts.
Part One - identifies the Church as an organization and introduces models applicable for today's changing world;
Part Two - presents a model of strategic leadership needed in the church now and in the future;
Part Three - discusses leadership and strategic foresight; and
Part Four - addresses organizational and leadership competencies needed to cross cultural and geographic boundaries.

The Church does and will continually face radical change and much uncertainty with undefined problems that require organizational models and leadership qualities and competencies far different from that which was successful in the past. We live in an age when we can no longer assume that what worked well once will work well again, an age when most assumptions can legitimately be challenged. To those unprepared, this is confusing and troubling. But with proper preparation and foresight, with strategies, proper planning and implementation, the Church will continue to flourish.  This book is designed to help leaders navigate the uncertainties of continual change.
