Innovation Roundtable added to the roster.
Regent University's School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship's (GLE) 2009 Roundtables of Contemporary Research and Practice welcomed approximately 30 participants and featured plenary speaker Larry Spears to the Virginia Beach Campus in May.
Despite the global economic downturn and heightened travel restrictions, participants came from the across the U.S. and overseas from such countries as Norway, Jamaica and South Africa.
Each year, this event welcomes academicians and practitioners of all levels and faiths from the U.S. and abroad to discuss and evaluate participants' research and practical application of the featured roundtable topics.
The 2009 roundtables event included the 7th Annual Servant Leadership Research Roundtable led by Dr. Kathleen Patterson, GLE associate professor, and the 3rd Annual Biblical Perspectives in Leadership Research Roundtable led by Dr. Corné Bekker, GLE associate professor, editor of the Journal of Biblical Perspectives in Leadership and co-editor of Inner Resources for Leaders.
Although this year's attendance was lower than that of previous years, Bekker and Patterson prefer smaller groups. "The intimacy of a smaller group fosters collaboration, idea sharing, streams of research and all kinds of opportunities," said Patterson.
In fact, the roundtables' combined plenary sessions with servant leadership expert Larry Spears and GLE Assistant Professor Dr. Myra Dingman fostered a unique bridge of interaction between participants and experts of the two roundtables.
"Seeing people work collaboratively together and build connections with one another is by far one of the most unique experiences I think people come here for," said Patterson. "They have access to top leading experts in the field and, not only do they have access to these people, they also get to pick their brains, talk about their research and talk about what needs to be done. People walk away charged to go back to their workforce, their research . . . and put this information to use," Patterson explained.
According to Bekker, papers were presented by practitioners as well as all levels of academics, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students, and faculty.
"The quality of the papers was exceptional," noted Bekker. "I was thrilled to see the higher level of exegetical research and scripture as well as critical engagement of leadership theory. It's what I've hoped for," he stated.
Hailing this event as the highlight of their year, Bekker and Patterson are already planning the 2010 event, which is scheduled for May 15-16 and will be expanded to include the Leading Transformative Innovation Roundtable led by Dr. Gary Oster, GLE associate professor and Doctor of Strategic Leadership program director. Additionally, the event will now be known as the Roundtables of Leadership Research and Practice so as to emphasize its leadership focus.
