Regent Professors Address Members of Peru's Congress

Legislators propose expansion of entrepreneurial initiatives through Regent

October 16, 2007

Dr. Douglas Walker of Regent's School of Government addresses the Peruvian legislators and others with the help of Dr. Marcela Chaván-Matviuk, who served as translator.

Virginia Beach, Va. – Regent University's School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship hosted a successful breakfast with Peruvian legislators during which they discussed entrepreneurship initiatives in Peru. The event was held in Lima, Peru on September 28, at the Country Club Hotel of Lima and followed the first stage of an extensive national entrepreneurship program that trained more than 3,400 young Peruvian entrepreneurs this past August.

Dr. Sergio Matviuk, School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship assistant professor and director of the school's Center for Latino Leadership and Dr. Douglas Walker, visiting professor of Regent's School of Government, discussed the role of the Peruvian Congress in facilitating and promoting entrepreneurship and business development throughout the country.

Eighty-five Peruvian legislators, senior legislative advisors, governors, high ranking officials from Peru's Ministry of Labor and other government offices, as well as pastors of prominent evangelical churches in Lima, Peru, attended the breakfast.

Walker discussed the contribution that entrepreneurship can make to Peru's development and the policy

strategy that can accelerate economic growth and allow them greater participation in the world economy, while Matviuk addressed the characteristics of credible congressional leadership that is committed to promote entrepreneurship and business development in their country and the practical actions they can take to increase their credibility.

According to Matviuk, numerous legislators were grateful for the information they received at the event and proposed that the same presentations be given on the floor of the Peruvian Congress followed by a seminar series on entrepreneurship and leadership for legislators and their staff. In addition, approximately 20 parliamentarians have sent letters to the Regent University administration requesting the opportunity to receive extensive training at Regent's Virginia Beach Campus.

Plans are underway to accommodate these requests as the School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship and the Robertson School of Government partner to develop curriculum to train Peruvian legislators about entrepreneurship, business and leadership to improve the life of Peru's citizens through economic development.
