School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship Dean Bruce Winston and Assistant Dean Julianne Cenac presented "Global Leadership: Preparing Leaders for Effective Global Practice" at the first Hampton Roads Global Business Conference held September 15 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, VA.
According to Cenac, "Today's business environment and the context in which leaders function is more dynamic than even a decade ago. As business expands beyond borders into more global and emerging markets, there is a tremendous need for leaders with innate abilities, cultural understanding, and capacity to effectively navigate uncertainty and the paradox that often exists between individual, corporate and cultural values."
During Winston and Cenac's presentation to local business leaders, academics and students, Cenac explored the distinct characteristics and effectiveness of global leaders and how to develop those leaders for success. Winston then shared his insight, providing real-life practical examples of how global leaders can effectively lead and manage by keeping in mind cultural differences found within the U.S. and around the world.
"I think we helped provoke thinking about what a global leader is, what makes them effective and how to develop them," said Cenac. She continued, "People seemed hungry to want to dialogue on these topics, like it was a conversation long overdue in the Hampton Roads area. So, on that note, we had a timely conference with a timely topic."
The Hampton Roads Global Business Conference, sponsored by Inside Business and several other Hampton Roads organizations, featured approximately 20 speakers, who discussed the various aspects of conducting business internationally, and provided networking and collaboration between participants representing diverse industries.
