Alum Pens Second Book in Leadership Series

July 1, 2009

Just days after graduating with his Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MOL) from the School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship in May, Jon Byler released his second book in the Global LEAD Series, titled, "The Art of Christian Leadership."

Recognizing the need for practical leadership training for those in the mission field and having a passion for training leaders in a cross-cultural context, Byler based his new book on the model of leadership he developed while serving as a pastor for more than 12 years in Thika, Kenya.

According to Byler, the "three essential components of Christian leadership are: character, knowledge and leadership skills." His first book, "The Heart of Christian Leadership," provided the foundation of character development, while "The Art of Christian Leadership" provides a very practical look at building vital leadership skills.

In ministry for 18 years, Byler currently serves as international coordinator for the Global LEAD Alliance (GLA), an international alliance of leadership development programs that focus on shaping character and leadership skills to develop a generation of leaders capable of fulfilling the great commission of Jesus Christ. Using his new book, as well as other materials he has developed in his position at GLA, Byler shares his leadership model through international training sessions in more than fifteen countries, equipping both church and marketplace leaders.

"The Art of Christian Leadership" provides leadership principles for a leader's personal development in the key areas of potential, vision, goals, time and priorities, as well as a leader's people skills and how the can develop and lead others. Furthermore, each chapter contains action assignments for immediate application of the lessons learned.

According to Byler, "The combination of practical assignments makes it not only a tool that an individual leader can use, but makes it ideal for classroom work or a group process where any leader can take a group of people through and see some positive changes in their leadership."

In fact, Byler believes that it is the action assignment at the end of each chapter that "takes the book from just being a nice book to something that can revolutionize someone's leadership."

Byler is currently working on a third book in the Global LEAD Series that is based on his final project

in the MOL program at Regent, where he focused on intercultural and cross-cultural leadership. According to Byler, his coursework brought clarity to various worldview and cultural leadership issues he had faced and pondered throughout his years in Kenya and allowed him to apply his coursework in his ministry position with GLA.
