Tyndale Publishes New Book by Regent Alumnus

Six Prayers God Always Answers *Results May Vary

June 19, 2008

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Prayer. It's the one action whose whole understanding is beyond many of us. How does it work? Is there a specific formula we must follow in order to do it right? If so, then why aren't all of our prayers answered?

In his newly released book, Six Prayers God Always Answers *Results May Vary, Regent alumnus Dr. Mark Herringshaw and co-author, Jennifer Schuchmann, share the truth that prayer is nothing more than communication with God, and there isn't a wrong or a right way to pray.

Published by Tyndale House, Six Prayers, uses illustrations from the Bible, history, and pop culture, revealing six different types of prayers including bargaining prayers, questioning prayers, prayers for justice, desperate prayers, audacious prayers, and prayers of beauty and happiness.

According to Herringshaw, Six Prayers "points out that the most authentic prayers may not look, feel, or smell like the ones we were taught in Sunday school." He continued, "Prayer isn't about a specific posture or a recitation of words, but rather the foundation of a relationship—a relationship where some unexpected results can occur."

From bold questions to bursts of emotion to silence, Herringshaw believes that real prayer, just like a real conversation, contains these elements. "Often the most precious prayers don't look like prayers at all. They are buried in our unfiltered reactions to the joys and pains and fears of typical days in typical lives," said Herringshaw.

According to Herringshaw, they key is not to learn how to pray better, but to learn "how to discover the answers you may have overlooked, and how relationship matters more than the words."

Herringshaw is a leader, pastor and much sought-after teacher who currently serves as a teaching pastor of the 7,000 member North Heights Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minn. He is also professor of leadership at the Master's Institute Seminary in St. Paul and an accomplished writer, speaker and seminar leader. Herringshaw earned his Ph.D. in organizational leadership from Regent University's School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship.
