Dr. David Gyertson returned to Regent University (Virginia) in July 2005 as Distinguished Professor of Leadership Formation and Renewal teaching courses in the Doctoral programs in Leadership and Higher Education. In addition, he is a Senior Fellow in Executive Leadership for the Christian Leadership Alliance's (formerly the Christian Management Association) Engstrom Institute. He also serves as a Senior Fellow for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C. Dr. Gyertson has a broad and varied background in higher education, publishing, consulting, executive coaching, ministry and media. He has held senior leadership positions in religious, charitable and business environments, including international and cross-cultural settings.
Dr. Gyertson holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University with a major in higher education administration and management. His graduate studies include work in adult education, higher education, counseling, organizational communications, innovation theory and college student personnel services. Dr. Gyertson did formal theological studies in Canada and then pursued studies at Spring Arbor University (Mich.), graduating with a BA in philosophy-religion and psychology. Additional graduate work in comparative higher education was done at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (Ontario, Canada).
Before returning to Regent, Dr. Gyertson was President of Taylor University (Indiana) for five years and Asbury College (Kentucky) for seven years. Prior to going to Asbury he was one of the founding administrators and then President of Regent University, (Virginia), where he now serves on the faculty of the School of Business & Leadership as well as the School of Education. Dr. Gyertson also worked with the Christian Broadcasting Network in a variety of management, leadership, publishing and broadcasting roles between 1985 and 1992. He has been the chief operating officer of three charitable foundations. Dr. Gyertson has held faculty appointments in speech communications, educational foundations, church history, management, higher education and leadership development.
Internationally, David has presented invited lectures, consultancies and strategic planning assessments for organizations and entities in Switzerland, Eastern Europe, Israel, Singapore, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Canada. His executive coaching clients include University Presidents, Senior Executives of Foundations, nonprofit think tanks and several charitable organizations including community hospitals, the Salvation Army, churches, denominations and the entertainment/media industry.
He has presented over 3000 lectures, speeches and sermons publishing numerous articles in a variety of popular magazines and professional journals. He recently taught a course at Oxford University for Regent University on the topic of Great Leaders in British History. He was the General Editor of Living by the Book a 20 volume biblical and contemporary Christian issues study curriculum published in cooperation with Zondervan Publishers and CBN Publishing (1990). In addition, he was the Editor of Salt & Light: A Christian Response to Contemporary Issues (Word Publishers 1990) and the revised edition of One Divine Moment: The Story of the Asbury Revival (1995). His resource, Faithful Stewards: Board Governance for Faith-Based Nonprofits, became available in the Fall of 2009. He also has served for the past sixteen years as the host and Executive Producer of Canadian Edition a weekly half hour television news, information and ministry program broadcast cost-to-coast on two of Canada's cable television networks.
Dr. Gyertson's community and public service includes the boards of the Christian College Consortium (a past chairman), Christian University GlobalNet, the Council of Independent Colleges of Indiana and the Marion Community Hospital (Indiana). He is a current Board member of the Board of Christian Broadcasting Associates in Canada. He has been actively involved with the United Way, Lions Club and now serves the US Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Staff Officer for Boating Safety based at the Incident Support Command Center at Portsmouth Coast Guard Station, Portsmouth, VA. He also is a certified boating safety instructor with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
David was featured in the 2000 TEMPLETON GUIDE: Colleges that Encourage Character Development for his excellence in higher education leadership. Two of the institutions he served as President achieved record enrollments and funding and rose to US News first place rankings. In 2008, he was selected as Alumnus of the Year for his alma mater Spring Arbor University. Gyertson holds ordination credentials with the Free Methodist Church and has served as senior minister for the Kingsview Free Methodist Church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the Kempsville Presbyterian Church (EPCA) in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His wife Nancy is a retired elementary school teacher. They have one daughter and two grand children.
