Work-Life Balance and Fulfillment at Work
November 4, 2010
Seminar Overview
Work is a part of our lives. As such, questions surrounding the issues of work-life balance and finding fulfillment are not foreign to any of us. Many, if not all, of us have wrestled with trying to “achieve balance” and “find fulfillment.” For many, the very notion of “finding fulfillment at or through work” is a contradiction in itself.
Economic growth has been a central policy objective of most governments over the last fifty or so years. Part of their overt rationale has been that by increasing national and individual incomes, people have more choice and the ability to pursue that choice. However, as an increasing number of commentators have identified, the relationship between growing economic prosperity and both individual happiness and social well-being that may have existed in "developed countries," appears to have broken down. While economic output has almost doubled in the last 30 years, life satisfaction has remained resolutely flat and depression has risen significantly over the last 50 years in developed countries. Many people are languishing rather than flourishing, living unhappy and unfulfilled lives.
Something is very wrong in the way we approach life and work. It seems we have lost our souls in the demands of our outer worlds. Albert Schweitzer referred to it as “sleeping sickness of the soul,” resulting in loss of vision, meaning, morality and compassion. Parker J. Palmer reminds us that “as we become more obsessed with succeeding, or at least surviving, in that world, we lose touch with our souls and disappear into our roles.”
This seminar will focus on the questions we all hold within us:
- Is there more to life?
- Why do we work?
- Can we truly find fulfillment through our work and balance in our lives?
- What happens when we rejoin our soul with our role?
Benefit & Use:
- Examine your view of work
- Find fulfillment in your work
- Understand the impact of soul and role alignment
